Anti-CD138 antibodies detect the protein encoded by the gene SDC1, or 'syndecan 1' in humans. The 310-amino acid protein is a member of the Syndecan proteoglycan family and the CD138 antigen is a documented cancer marker. The cellular localization is predicted to be membrane-associated and secreted. Glycosylation sites have been reported.
