Antibodies are produced by plasma cells (PC) that are terminally differentiated B cells and play crucial roles in host protection against infections but are considered to mediate autoimmunity in patients with rheumatic diseases, such as systemic lupus (SLE) or rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Our research aims at understanding the biology of B cells and antibody-secreting cells (ASC) in health and disease, in this experiment we are looking for markers of PC, and for that we stain PCs using CD138.

Results Summary

As it can be observed in the figure, plasma cells (PCs) can clear be stained among singlets and lymphocytes. The frequency of PCs in the spleen increase with age of the mice, but is around 0.3-1% in adult mice.
