In humans, this target is encoded by the gene, G protein-coupled estrogen receptor 1 (GPER1). Orthologs for GPER1 have also been reported in other species, including mouse, rat, bovine, frog, zebrafish, chimpanzee and chicken.
The canonical GPER1 protein is 375 amino acids in length, 42.2 kDa in mass, and has a nuclear, cytoplasmic, mitochondrial, ER, Golgi and membrane subcellular localization. It is a member of the G-protein coupled receptor 1 protein family. GPER1 functions in estrogen receptor activity and chromatin binding, as well as having a role in GPCR signaling. Tissue-specific expression of GPER1 has been observed in several tissues, including brain, placenta and prostate. Post-translational modifications have been described, notably glycosylation.
