Senescence assay kits are available to measure the markers expressed by cells undergoing senescence, or biological aging. Senescence causes cell cycle arrest and repression of genes related to the progression of the cell cycle. Senescent cells express characteristic features such as acidic senescence-associated beta-galactosidase (SA-beta-Gal) activity and upregulation of cell cycle inhibitors like p16INK4a, p53 and p21CIP1. Most senescence assays measure the levels of SA-beta-Gal in the cell, through use of histochemistry or a fluorometric substrate. Senescence assay kits can be used to study the cell cycle, the effect of chemicals on cell cycle arrest and cell aging.
