Alkaline phosphatase, also called AP and ALP, is a membrane-bound glycoprotein and homodimer with a molecular weight of 86 kDa. At a basic pH, it catalyzes the hydrolysis of phosphate monoesters with the release of inorganic phosphate. It is found naturally in many organisms, both prokaryotic and eukaryotic. Human ALPs can be classified into at least four tissue-specific isoenzymes, as placental alkaline phosphatase (PLALP), intestinal alkaline phosphatase (IALP), liver/bone/kidney alkaline phosphatase (L/B/K ALP), and germ cell ALP. Alkaline phosphatase can be used in the lab during DNA cloning to prevent self-ligation. It is also used as a label in blots and immunoassays, where it catalyzes substrates to produce a detectable color change.
