Formamide is used in nucleic acid hybridization buffers, genetic fingerprinting, Southern and Northern blotting, YAC screening, and other molecular biology applications. It lowers the melting temperature of nucleic acid hybrids, allowing them to be manipulated, and can be used to achieve stronger denaturing conditions in a sequencing gel. Formamide is available from many vendors. Quality, economics, and the reputation of the vendor are some of the top considerations when purchasing formamide.
