Contemporary microscopes are stand-alone optical devices that enable the necessary magnification needed to visualize processes at the tissue and cellular levels. Thanks to advances in optical technologies, researchers today can enjoy many choices in instruments. Microscopes and imaging systems can be categorized by their general build (such as upright, inverted, or digital systems) or primary function (stereo/zoom, electron, confocal, super-resolution, in vivo imaging, or slide scanning).
