A549 Cell Lines

The A549 cell line is an immortalized human cell line isolated from a pulmonary adenocarcinoma sample in an adult male. A549 cells have been characterized to possess morphologic and biochemical features of pulmonary alveolar type II (ATII) cells. The cell line has become widely used as an in vitro model for lung cancer research and ATII epithelium. A549 cells have been reported to spontaneously differentiate to the ATI phenotype over time. However, specific culture conditions can be used to promote a more differentiated ATII cell phenotype for longer-term culture. A549 cells with genetic modifications, such as gene overexpression or knockouts have also been generated for research use. Visit the cell supplier page for more information.
