AMPK Inhibitors

5' AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), also known as 5' adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase is a heterotrimeric protein that consists of three protein subunits (α, β, and γ subunits). AMPK modulates cellular homeostasis and is involved in stimulation of hepatic fatty acid oxidation and ketogenesis, inhibition of cholesterol synthesis, lipogenesis, and modulation of insulin secretion among other things. Recent studies have pinpointed overactivity of AMPK as a factor in the impulse to overeat and in diseases such as Alzheimer’s and metabolic disorders. While, specific inhibitors to AMPK remain elusive there are some selective inhibitors currently available. Compound C, also known as Dorsomorphin, is a well-known small molecule that selectively inhibits AMPK.
