Phosphate-buffered saline, or PBS, is a common laboratory buffer solution. Standard PBS contains NaCl, KCl, Na2HPO4, and KH2PO4. At a buffering pH of around 7.4, PBS is generally non-toxic and isotonic to most cells, making it useful in dilutions and washing procedures. It has been demonstrated to be a suitable transfer medium for SARS-CoV-2 for up to 7 days. Other common variants of PBS include Dulbecco’s PBS (D-PBS) and PBS + tween (PBST).
