pH2AX antibody was able to discriminate foci in rat PBMCs. We noticed that the fixation of the sample affects the staining. Prior to staining we incubated the samples with 1% Triton X-100.Optimization was required for different tissues.Image: pH2AX (green), DAPI (nuclei).

Sometimes foci are difficult to detect, although a "blur" of staining may be found in the nuclei of the cells.
