Homogenizers are used to blend chemical or biological samples. This often includes lysing of cells to form one homogenous suspension. With the addition of a homogenizer instrument to your laboratory, the necessity of a mortar and pestle and brute force are eliminated. Homogenizer instruments often employ pre-filled microtubes with ceramic beads to aid in disruption and mixing of cells. This is often aided by oscillation or reciprocal motion of the homogenizer. Homogenizers are often used in a series of steps to complete DNA, RNA or mRNA extractions along with other procedures requiring homogenization of samples without the degradation of nucleic acids. There are a variety of homogenizers to choose from, some features to consider are capacity, speed (RPM) range, sample type and recommended applications.
