The K562 cell line comprises immortalized human cells widely used in biomedical research, including leukemia, apoptosis, and cancer immunotherapy. K562 cells originate from an adult patient with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). The cells are non-adherent, appear smooth and rounded, and contain some physical features of undifferentiated leukemic cells and granulocytic leukemic cells. They are reported to spontaneously develop characteristics similar to early-stage erythrocytes, granulocytes and monocytes. The K562 cell line has been notably used in large-scale CRISPR/Cas9 gene-targeting screens. Recombinant K562 cells with genetic modifications, such as constitutive genes or knockouts have also been generated for research use. Visit the cell supplier page for more information.
