GST assay kits are available from several suppliers to detect the activity of glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzymes. GST utilizes glutathione (GSH) in order to detoxify xenobiotics and prevent their interaction with important cellular proteins and nucleic acids. GST assay kits use the GST-catalyzed reaction between GSH and the GST substrate CDNB (1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene), which produces a dinitrophenyl thioether. The formation of this product is proportional to the amount of active GST present in the sample. GST assays can be used in assessing various biological effects, such as cell and tissue damage and pharmaceutical treatment.
