Superoxide dismutase assay kits are available from several suppliers for the determination of superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme activity in biological samples. SODs are antioxidant enzymes that catalyze the dismutation of superoxide radicals into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. The superoxide dismutase assay is a colorimetric analysis in which xanthine oxidase provides a superoxide that will react with a dye to form a colored product. Superoxide dismutase will then scavenge the superoxide, lowering the amount available for the reaction and thus reducing the intensity of color. Through the estimation of SOD activity, superoxide dismutase assays can provide information on antioxidant or anti-inflammatory activities within a system.
