Membrane potential assay kits that use the cationic dye TMRE label active mitochondria, displaying a bright orange/red fluorescence in healthy cells, while showing reduced, diffuse fluorescence in apoptotic cells. Membrane potential assay kits can be used to indicate the health of cells, to study the effect of certain drugs on cells, and as preliminary indicators of pathological conditions.
