However, the use of guard columns, coupled with correct maintenance of the column, can extend the lifetime of the main column. A guard column is a cartridge or column that is fixed between the injector and the main analytical column. Guard columns can filter and capture suspended solids and impurities, preventing them from reaching the main column. The guard column should be made of the same material and have the same particle size as the main column. Guard columns will need to be changed regularly.
