Nanoparticles are microscopic particles of gold or other metals that range in size from 1 nm – 8 µm and are commonly suspended in fluid to form a colloid. Gold nanoparticles have found use in various technologies, including electronics, biotechnology, cosmetics, and biomedicine as catalysts, probes, and indicators. These molecules can scatter light intensely, offering another option for bright staining in microscopic imaging. They have also been used in imaging intracellular trafficking under dark field microscopy. Other uses also include delivery of various compounds into cells and tissues, such as skin. They are reported to generate reactive oxygen species which can cause oxidative damage to microbial cells.
