Ion Exchange Resins

Ion exchange resins are insoluble matrices containing positive or negatively charged particles that can attract and retain molecules of the opposite charge. These resins are used for the purification of proteins and peptides, as well as nucleic acids. Common charged groups used include sulfonic or carboxylic acid salts or ammonium salts. Resins containing acids are known as cation exchangers as they exchange positively charged ions, while those with ammonium groups are known as anion exchangers as they exchange negatively charged ions.
