Streptozotocin

Streptozotocin Streptozotocin is an antineoplastic compound that was originally isolated from a Streptomyces bacterium. It is used as an alkylating chemotherapeutic agent to treat cancers in the pancreatic islets. It is toxic to the insulin-producing Beta cells in mammals and can be used to induce type diabetes 1 for experimental purposes. It is an analog of N-acetylglucosamine, which, when transported into Beta cells by GLUT-2, causes cellular toxicity, thereby lowing insulin production.
