Due to its anti-freeze properties, it is used as a cryoprotectant for the cold storage of proteins, enzymes, cells, small organisms, and other biological samples. It is added in electrophoresis loading buffers to allow proteins or DNA to sink into gel wells. Glycerol gradients can also be used to purify proteins, bacteriophages, or organelles.
