Functionally, this protein is known to catalyze the oxidation of long-chain primary alcohols and the oxidation of S-(hydroxymethyl) glutathione. The canonical protein structure is reported to have an amino acid length of 374 residues, a mass of 39.7 kDa, and is a member of the Zinc-containing alcohol dehydrogenase protein family. It is known to be localized in the cytoplasm. The ADH5 gene has been associated with the disease, AMED syndrome. Other alias names for this target include ADHX, AMEDS, BMFS7, FALDH, FDH, GSH-FDH, GSNOR, and ADH-3.
