Treponema pallidum ELISA kits are assays designed to detect Treponema pallidum, the causative agent of syphilis, or alternatively, antibodies produced against it. T. pallidum is a microaerophilic spirochete bacterium which cannot be cultured in vitro. There are three subspecies of the bacterium, T. p. pallidum, T. p. endemicum, and T. p. pertenue, which cause the diseases syphilis, bejel and yaws respectively.
