It has been reported that GM3 Synthase plays a role in carbohydrate metabolism and homeostasis and protein glycosylation, among other functions. Structurally, the ST3GAL5 protein is 418 amino acid residues in length and 48 kilodaltons in mass. However, as many as 3 protein isoforms have been identified. It is localized to the golgi of the cell. In terms of tissue specificity, it is ubiquitously expressed across many tissue types. This protein is known to be N-glycosylated.
