Protein carbonyl ELISA kits are assays designed to detect the presence of carbonyl (CO) groups in proteins. Carbonyl groups–aldehydes and ketones–are produced from oxidation of amino acid side chains such as arginine, lysine and proline. Protein carbonyl groups are used as a biomarker of oxidative stress and can be measured with the use of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH). High levels of protein carbonyl groups have been observed in patients with Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and sepsis.
