Functionally, this protein is known to be important for the transport of glutamate from the cytosol into the mitochondrial matrix with the concomitant import of a proton (symport system). The canonical protein structure is reported to have an amino acid length of 315 residues, a mass of 33.8 kDa, and is a member of the Mitochondrial carrier (TC 2.A.29) protein family. It is known to be localized in the mitochondria and is reported to be expressed in the brain, to a lesser extent in testis, and poorly in all the other tissues.
