In humans, this target is encoded by the gene, RAB27A, member RAS oncogene family (RAB27A). Orthologs for RAB27A have also been reported in other species, including mouse, rat, bovine, frog, zebrafish, chimpanzee and chicken.
The canonical RAB27A protein is 221 amino acids in length, 24.9 kDa in mass, and has a lysosomal and membrane subcellular localization. It is a member of the Rab protein family. RAB27A functions in G protein activity and GDP binding, as well as having a role in the innate immune system, vesicle-mediated transport, and post-translational protein modification. In terms of tissue expression, it is found in all the examined tissues except in brain.
