Anti-Neurocan antibodies are used in the immunodetection of the protein encoded by the NCAN gene. In humans, the canonical protein has a reported length of 1321 amino acid residues and a mass of 143.1 kDa. It is known to be a secreted protein. It is notably expressed in cerebrospinal fluid. A member of the Aggrecan/versican proteoglycan protein family, it is believed to modulate neuronal adhesion and neurite growth during development by binding to neural cell adhesion molecules (NG-CAM and N-CAM). Post-translational modifications have been described, including O-glycosylation. Other names for this target antigen include neurocan core protein, chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan 3 (neurocan), neurocan proteoglycan, and CSPG3.
