In humans, this target is encoded by the gene, large tumor suppressor kinase 2 (LATS2). Orthologs for LATS2 have also been reported in other species, including mouse, rat, bovine, frog, zebrafish, chimpanzee and chicken.
The canonical LATS2 protein is 1088 amino acids in length, 120.1 kDa in mass, and has a nuclear and cytoplasmic subcellular localization. It is a member of the AGC Ser/Thr protein kinase protein family. LATS2 functions in metal ion binding and ATP binding, as well as having a role in signal transduction. Tissue-specific expression of LATS2 has been observed in several tissues, including heart and skeletal muscle. Post-translational modifications have been described, notably phosphorylation.
