My current research focuses on studying the impact of maternal factors on offspring intestinal immune system development in early life and its overall impact on colitis and colorectal cancer. I often use Dextran Sulphate Sodium Salt (Colitis Grade) to induce colitis in mice and to model colitis associated colorectal cancer.

Experimental Design and Results Summary

Application

DSS is used to induce colitis in mice chemically. This reagent is used in mice to model human IBD and colitis associated cancer.

Starting Material

C57BL/6 mice from CT and Treatment/KO mice

Tips

First batch test the DSS on C57BL/6 to determine the working concentration of DSS. Generally it varies between 1.5 -2.5% in drinking water.

Results Summary

Result here is shown for % bodyweight change from two different group of mice treated with 2.5% of DSS in drinking water for 1 week followed by untreated drinking water and then another round of 2.5% DSS water. Post DSS challenge mice looses weight due to inflammation induce diarrhea.

Summary

The Good

Very well accepted in the field to model human IBD.

The Bad

Batch to Batch variability is reported, so you have to test each new order batch or order in bulk.

The Bottom Line

If you want to study the IDB, you wont escape this reagent. Its a must
