Insulin is a major glucose-lowering hormone, insufficiency of which causes hyperglycemia observed in type 2 diabetes. Insulin regulates the cellular uptake, utilization, and storage of glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids and inhibits the breakdown of glycogen, protein, and fat.
