Antibodies are produced by plasma cells (PC) that are terminally differentiated B cells and play crucial roles in host protection against infections but are considered to mediate autoimmunity in patients with rheumatic diseases, such as systemic lupus (SLE) or rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Our research aims at understanding the biology of antibody secreting cells (ASC) and B cells in health and disease. Here, we aimed at identify surface markers of plasma cells.

Within lymphocytes and singlets, we could identify a population of cells expressing high levels of CD138 and CD39. Those are plasma cells. All cells expressing CD138 also express CD39. Thus CD39 in a good plasma cells marker and has some advantages in comparison with CD138 (Dang VD, et al. Front Immunol. 2022).
