MMP-2 and TIMP-2 are present in the arterial wall of AAA as demonstrated by immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization and in situ zymography. Aortic SMCs cultured from aneurysmal tissue express MMP-2 protein and mRNA at a significantly higher level than controls; a finding that was not present in other mesenchymal tissue.
