These tubes are being used for sample collection in a nationwide trial. The tubes allow small blood samples to be lysed and RNA to be stabilised in one simple step; they are very easy to use. Samples are stable for up to 5 days at room temperature which allows for easy transportation between the collection site and processing lab. The subsequent RNA extraction has been very reliable with high yields obtained.

Handled as per the manufacturers instruction these give very good results. The tubes need to be adequately filled and vigorously shaken immediately otherwise the RNA yield will be reduced.

Results Summary

The tubes are very easy to use. They are handled in a similar manner to vacutainer blood collection tubes. They take 3mL of blood (since they are already filled with 6mL stabilisation solution) and require vigorous shaking for about 30 seconds immediately after. The tubes are then stable at room temperature for 5 days although we haven't had reason to leave them that long. We have always extracted RNA within 48 hours maximum and have achieved high yields.
