Finnpipette Digital Pipette From Thermo Scientific

Finnpipette Digital Pipette From Thermo Scientific
Finnpipette’s digital pipette range consists of eleven single channel, variable volume pipettes which cover a large range of volumes. This collection ranges from the tiny 0.2-2 ul pipette through to the very large volume 2-10 ml pipette. All members of the digital pipette collection feature “super blow-out technology” which reportedly ensures dispensing with high accuracy and precision. Published inaccuracy specifications for the entire Finnpipette digital range are comparable to those published by rival companies. The micro range of Finnpipette digital pipettes (the nine members of the range with maximum volumes under 1 ml) report inaccuracies of <±3.5% and <±1.0% at the pipettes’ minimum and maximum volumes respectively, with the exception of the smallest member of the range, the 0.2-2 ul pipette. The 0.2-2 ul pipette is reported to have inaccuracies of ±12.0% and ±2.5% respectively. The inaccuracies for minimum and maximum pipetting volumes for the macro range of these pipettes (the 1-5 ml and 2-10 ml pipettes) are reported at <±1.0% and 0.5% respectively. Calibration of the range is quick and easy and Finnpipette even provide a calibration calculator for their pipettes on their web site.

The Finnpipette digital pipette collection is, as advertised, lightweight and very comfortable to use. The entire range is autoclavable at 121ºC while fully assembled and the plastics used in the Finnpipette digital range offer good acid and alkali resistance making for easy decontamination. The pipettes fit the hand very nicely. The finger rest is well-designed and allows the pipette to hang from the index finger freeing other fingers and ultimately reducing fatigue when using over long periods. The plunger length of this range of pipettes is good and the volume display is large and very easy to read. The tip ejector button is relatively small and rounded. Unlike some other brands of pipettes, the tip ejector button is unobtrusive, without being too small to easily use. Finnpipette digital pipettes use an air displacement piston arrangement which generally provides for smooth pipetting. The only issue I have had with this range is when attempting to pipette small volumes slowly. When set at the lower end of the volume range I have found that the action of these pipettes can become a little “sticky” making it difficult to dispense the liquid slowly.

I have used pipettes from the Finnpipette digital range extensively and am extremely impressed with their functionality. These pipettes are a simple design, but very efficient. They are light, comfortable to use and comparable in their inaccuracies to other brands. Furthermore, these pipettes are generally a bit less expensive than their counterparts from rival companies. The only factor which detracts from this collection is their tendency to be a bit sticky when pipetting volumes at the lower end of the pipette’s range. Overall, however, I consider these pipettes to be one of the best pipettes available for general, everyday laboratory use.

The Good

Comfortable, lightweight, relatively inexpensive and available in a large range of volumes.

The Bad

Pipetting can be a little “sticky” when attempting to pipette very small volumes slowly.

The Bottom Line

A simple, but extremely functional range of single channel, variable volume pipettes which are ideal for general laboratory use.
