Pipetting is required in all molecular biology applications and high levels of accuracy and precision are necessary. Eppendorf offers high-performance pipettes for all volume ranges. I personally own 2 sets of four different variable pipettes from Eppendorf. I have the 0.1 – 2.5ul (for lower smaller volumes of reagents like Taq polymerase and primer-probe mix), 0.5 – 10ul (for addition of nucleic acid), 10 – 100 µl (for making master mix) and 100 – 1000ul (extensively used in nucleic acid extraction).
The features which I like best with these pipettes are:
- Two button operation, which provides easy, and single-handed operation
- Four figure volume display, which provides better legibility
- Color-coding of the operation button and the volume display, which makes it easier to distinguish between pipettes and determine which corresponding tips are needed
- Autoclavable lower part for cleaning and decontamination
I have used pipettes from a couple of other vendors, but the Research pipettes from Eppendorf have really impressed me with their performance. These pipettes are simple in design and provide a very comfortable grip, which makes pipetting much easier. The only limiting factor which may come into the picture is cost, which is comparatively on higher side. Overall, I consider Eppendorf pipettes the most amendable pipette its category.
