We study a relative rare subset of terminally differentiated B cells - plasma cells. Since these cells are rare it is very useful to be able to collect as much information as possible of the sample. With Symphony, our experiments increased in quality as it is possible to read 14 colors on a regular basis (relatively easy) and I believe we can use even more if we have more antibodies labeled with BUV dyes. The use of more colors allowed us to collect more information with the same biological material and in less time.

The Bottom Line

Although we had problems in the beginning, mainly with a new program called BD coherent connection 4 where you turn on the lasers, now we are running the instrument relatively well and still increase the number of fluorochromes that can be read. It is worth the investment! It is a pity that the BD service in Europe is not to the level of that in the States - when the machine has problems we have to wait too long to have it fixed.
