Experimental Design and Results Summary

Application

Blood Collection

Starting Material

Mice

Protocol Overview

Tightly scruff mice such that one side of the face is tilted up and away from the body exposing the submandibular vein is exposed and tight against the jaw bone. Be sure not to strangle mice or scruff in a way that causes fur to bunch around the neck. Then use the lancet to make a single puncture wound just behind the whisker. If scruff is correct and yo hit the vein then blood will well immediately and can be collected. When you release the mice then the vein will stop bleeding. The vein will not clot fast enough if you are still scuffing the mice.

Tips

Lancets stay sharp for up to 3 attempts on an adult mouse but will go dull so should be changed often.

Results Summary

Three large drops should be sufficient for all downstream uses without over bleeding the mice. Submandibular bleeds can be done on mice as young as three weeks with an appropriate animal protocol.
