An inverted microscope is necessary for routine observation of cell culture. This VWR unit produces good images. Some of the fit and finish, features, and especially documentation could be better but this is a budget unit.

Protocol Overview

The microscope is quick and intuitive to set up except for deciphering the instructions for aligning optics.

Tips

The included phase telescope (Bertrand) lens is placed in the eye tube and used to view the focal plane for alignment. This lens is adjusted by extending or retracting the lens until the back focal plane comes into focus. At that point, one can align the various components.

Results Summary

Pros: The microscope produces good phase contrast images with all lenses. It is a good value. Cons: The features and fit and finish are basic. No automatic brightness adjustment from bright field to phase, some parts have rough finishing, the aperture lever is rather loose, the filter sliders fit sloppy, and so on. The biggest problem encountered was the unclear instructions for aligning the lamp and light path.

Features Summary

4X and phase contrast 10X, 20X, 40X objective lenses
