Our experiments are predominantly carried out in vitro so a CO2 incubator is necessary for cell culture. This incubator was selected because it is air jacketed and capable of automated heat decontamination.

The incubator should be placed above floor level to minimize contaminants entering the chamber when the door is operated. It comes with tubing and some hardware for installing the gas line(s). The initial startup is performed through the menu system and can take a few hours to come up to temperature and auto-calibrate.
Keep an eye on the water level; the alarm will annoy the entire floor!
This unit is available with either TC or IR CO2 sensor and either stainless steel or copper interior. My budget only allowed for the TC and stainless steel. In my opinion, the TC sensor is fine especially since the unit recovers temperature quickly. I would opt for the antimicrobial (and beautiful) copper if it were within budget though. The controls are easily accessible from the front. The water for humidity maintenance goes directly in the canted chamber floor; no need for a pan. A sensor detects low water levels. The direct heat, air jacket design has several advantages over a water jacket. It is lighter and heats faster meaning easier setup and restart, it eliminates periodic jacket filling, and allows for heat decontamination. All worthwhile for giving up the temperature stability of a water jacket. The only sour note is the rough interface between the inner door handle (blue plastic) and its latch. They grind against each other producing small plastic shavings.
