Our lab performs a good deal of research using 96, 48, and 24-well plates. Our multichannel pipettes work great for 96-well plates, but aren't the right width between wells to pipette into 48 or 24-well plates. We chose this particular pipette because of its ability to adjust the distance between wells and thereby transition quickly between plates with differently-spaced wells, especially some of the specialty plates that we're currently using. Few brands carry a pipette like this, and we chose Rainin because of how much we liked borrowing the Rainin multichannel pipettes from an adjacent lab.

Protocol Overview

Before using this multichannel on a well plate, I attach tips and double-check that the distance between each pipet tip is equal to the distance between the center of each well on the plate. If not, I adjust the distance between the pipet tips to suit the plate. Making adjustments is as easy as turning a knob on the side of the pipette, and it locks in place once you've chosen the correct width for your experiment. Once that's done, just dial in the needed volume between 5 and 50 uL, lock the volume selector at the top, and then use it like any other pipette.

Tips

Don't adjust the width while the pipet tips contain volume, or risk losing some of it.

Results Summary

We have double-checked the pipetted volumes from each well of this pipette, in all different widths. Each time, we have been pleasantly surprised to find how accurately this pipette transfers liquids. We have found this pipette to be particularly useful with our specialty plates for hanging-drop cultures, etc. because of its versatility and reliability.
