Our lab runs a lot of genotyping PCRs and, to visualize the PCR products, we often use ethidium bromide.

The ethidium bromide is added to the gel solution before casting at a concentration of 1:20,000. No post-staining is necessary.
Nothing in particular (do be careful with the stock solution though, as ethidium bromide can be a carcinogen!)
