A recent study published in The Journal of Immunology takes a look at the intricate relationship between sleep quality and the immune system, potentially explaining the connection between poor sleep and chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular conditions.
Researchers from the Dasman Diabetes Institute in Kuwait City examined the sleep patterns and blood samples of 237 healthy adults with varying body mass indexes (BMIs). They discovered that obese individuals experienced lower sleep quality and higher levels of chronic low-grade inflammation compared to lean participants. Additionally, obese subjects showed increased levels of non-classical monocytes, a type of immune cell that patrols the body and responds to inflammatory signals.
The study also included a 24-hour sleep deprivation experiment involving five healthy, lean individuals. Remarkably, the researchers found that even a single night of sleep deprivation altered the monocyte profile in these participants, mirroring the changes observed in obese individuals. This finding suggests that the immune system is highly responsive to sleep patterns and may adapt quickly to changes in sleep duration.
Fatema Al-Rashed, the study's lead researcher, emphasized the growing public health challenge posed by disrupted sleep patterns, stating, "Advancements in technology, prolonged screen time, and shifting societal norms are increasingly disruptive to regular sleeping hours. This disruption in sleep has profound implications for immune health and overall well-being."

The research team plans to further investigate the mechanisms linking sleep deprivation to immune changes and explore potential interventions, such as structured sleep therapies or technology-use guidelines, to reverse these immune alterations.
“In the long term, we aim for this research to drive policies and strategies that recognize the critical role of sleep in public health. We envision workplace reforms and educational campaigns promoting better sleep practices, particularly for populations at risk of sleep disruption due to technological and occupational demands. Ultimately, this could help mitigate the burden of inflammatory diseases like obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases,” said Dr Al-Rashed.
