A recent study published in the Journal of Biomedical Optics has demonstrated the superior capabilities of shortwave-infrared (SWIR) fluorescence imaging in visualizing the lymphatic system. This advancement addresses longstanding challenges in studying lymphatic vessels, which play a crucial role in fluid balance and immune function but have been difficult to image due to their variable structure and small size.

Researchers compared SWIR imaging (900 to 1800 nm) with traditional near-infrared first window (NIR-I, 700 to 900 nm) imaging, using two fluorescent probes: indocyanine green (ICG) and silver sulfide quantum dots (QDs). The study revealed that SWIR imaging significantly reduces scattering and autofluorescence background, resulting in clearer and more detailed images of lymphatic vessels.

SWIR imaging with ICG provided 1.7 times better resolution and sensitivity than NIR-I, while SWIR imaging with QDs nearly doubled these improvements. This enhanced clarity allows for more accurate estimation of vessel size in vivo compared to conventional techniques.

According to the team from the Medical College of Wisconsin, SWIR imaging with silver sulfide QDs provides superior image resolution, outperforming traditional NIR-I imaging techniques. This technological advancement offers new possibilities for understanding lymphatic system functions and could have significant implications for medical research and diagnostics.
