Sichuan University researchers have uncovered a link between fat distribution and the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The research, involving over 400,000 participants followed for an average of nine years, reveals that excess fat in the belly and arms may increase the likelihood of these conditions, while higher muscle strength appears to offer protection.
Huan Song, lead author of the study published in Neurology, emphasized the importance of these findings in developing preventive strategies for neurodegenerative diseases, which affect more than 60 million people worldwide. The study suggests that targeted interventions to reduce trunk and arm fat while promoting muscle development could be more effective than general weight control in mitigating disease risk.

The research found that individuals with high levels of belly fat were 13% more likely to develop neurodegenerative diseases, while those with high levels of arm fat faced an 18% increased risk. Conversely, participants with high muscle strength were 26% less likely to develop these conditions compared to those with low strength.
The study also highlighted the role of cardiovascular diseases in this relationship. The occurrence of heart disease and stroke after the start of the study partially explained the connection between body composition and neurodegenerative diseases. This underscores the importance of managing cardiovascular health as a potential means of preventing or delaying the onset of conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
