Recent research in cancer immunotherapy has emphasized the crucial role of the immune system in combating cancer. Now, a new study led by researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai has unveiled how variations in immune genetics impact lung cancer risk.

Published in Science, the study focused on human leukocyte antigen (HLA) molecules, essential for immune recognition. The study discovered that individuals with heterozygosity at HLA-II genes exhibited a reduced risk of lung cancer, particularly significant among smokers. This challenges traditional beliefs and underscores the importance of immune genetics in cancer susceptibility. By incorporating polygenic risk scores into their analysis, the team identified an increased lifetime risk of lung cancer in smokers with identical versions of HLA-II genes.
