Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory researchers say they have found a potential anti-aging solution that involves reprogramming T cells to eliminate senescent cells—cells that cease replication and accumulate with age, contributing to various age-related diseases.

The CAR T cell-based senolytic therapy they developed was shown to safely eliminate senescent cells in mice. As a result, the mice ended up living healthier lives. They had lower body weight, improved metabolism and glucose tolerance, and increased physical activity. All benefits came without any tissue damage or toxicity.

“If we give it to aged mice, they rejuvenate. If we give it to young mice, they age slower. No other therapy right now can do this, " explained Corina Amor Vegas, first author of the paper published in Nature Aging.

The longevity of CAR T cells is a game-changer. A single dose administered at a young age was found to have lifelong effects, protecting against conditions like obesity and diabetes.

“T cells have the ability to develop memory and persist in your body for really long periods, which is very different from a chemical drug, " added Amor Vegas. "With CAR T cells, you have the potential of getting this one treatment, and then that’s it. For chronic pathologies, that’s a huge advantage.”

While CAR T cells have been FDA-approved for treating blood cancers since 2017, Amor Vegas is among the first scientists to demonstrate their broader medical potential, extending beyond cancer treatment. The research is now exploring whether CAR T cells not only promote healthier lives but also contribute to increased longevity.
