Although quitting smoking prevents further brain tissue loss, the study emphasizes that it does not restore the brain to its original size.
Published in Biological Psychiatry: Global Open Science, the findings shed light on a previously overlooked aspect of the harmful effects of smoking. Senior author Laura J. Bierut, underscores the significance of recognizing smoking's adverse effects on the brain, a focus that has historically been overshadowed by concerns about lung and heart health.
The research untangles the complex interplay between genetics, smoking behavior, and brain volume. Analyzing data from over 32,000 individuals in the UK Biobank, the researchers discovered links between smoking history and brain volume, genetic risk for smoking and smoking behavior, and genetic risk for smoking and brain volume. Importantly, the study reveals that the association between smoking and brain volume is dose-dependent, with heavier smokers experiencing more significant brain shrinkage.

While genetic predisposition influences smoking behavior, which subsequently leads to decreased brain volume, the study emphasizes that the irreversible damage caused by smoking extends to brain shrinkage. Even among those who quit smoking, their brains remained permanently smaller compared to those who never smoked.
Lead author Yoonhoo Chang urges individuals to recognize smoking as a modifiable risk factor and emphasizes that quitting is the single action that can prevent further damage, reducing the risk of accelerated aging of the brain and dementia.
