Spectrometers are analytical instruments that measure continuous variables in a spectrum to identify and characterize a variety of biological samples. Capable of sensitive measurements at the atomic and molecular scales, these instruments are used widely in pharmaceutical and industrial areas, such as in drug development, manufacturing, material science, and chemical analysis of industrial, environmental, and forensic samples. Some common types of spectrometers include atomic spectrometers, molecular spectrometers, and mass spectrometers. Atomic spectrometers vaporize and atomize samples, producing characteristic electromagnetic spectra that are read by the instrument. The number of atoms, and thus the elements present in the sample, can then be determined. Mass spectrometers, on the other hand, vaporize ions and analyze mass-to-charge ratios. Molecular spectrometers, such as FTIR, Raman, and UV/Vis/NIR spectrometers read molecular spectra resulting from molecular rotations, molecular vibration, and electronic states.
