Multiplex assays are immunoassays that are able to detect multiple analytes simultaneously. They are used for the detection of hormones such as adrenalin, noradrenaline, insulin and glucagon, and inflammatory biomarkers such as interleukins and cytokines, among others. Bead-based multiplex assays use beads with different coloured dyes at distinct ratios which can be bound to unique analytes. The addition of a secondary antibody conjugated to a fluorescent reporter then allows quantitative measurement of the corresponding analyte in the assay. Certain multiplex assays can be carried out using flow cytometry, while some can also be read using image-based plate readers. Multiplex assays are more advantageous than traditional ELISAs as they can detect multiple analytes at once from a given sample, which can save time, labor, and cost, as well as sample material.
